In her devotional “Growing Up,” Micah Harris confessed to being born-again, but still clubbing, drinking, and gossiping. She wrote that while attending a small group women’s Sunday School class she was encouraged to set SMART goals for her life. The result was that Micah’s spiritual growth could be seen by her Sunday School class and others in the church.

All this week, the Holy Spirit has reminded me of Micah’s devotional.  You see, I was Micah’s Sunday School teacher, but now I needed this lesson for myself. Not because I was clubbing, drinking, or gossiping, but because I was a balance breaker (see last week’s blog). This week, God brought back to my remembrance how to regain balance in my life: develop and consistently practice a SMART life. My lifestyle practices must be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-based.

S (specific): I want my life (all my words and deeds) to please God. Colossians 3:17 – And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

M (measurable): I want my life to please God all the time. Psalm 34:1 – I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

A (attainable): My life can be pleasing to God all the time because I will depend on Jesus Christ to help me. Philippians 4:13 – I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.

R (realistic): I cannot fail to please God in all my ways with Jesus helping me. Romans 8:37 – We are more than conquerors through Him that loved us.

T (time-based): Through Jesus’s help, I will please God all the days of my life on earth and I will live with Him in heaven forever. Psalm 23:6 – Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

Summary of my SMART life goals: With Jesus’s help, my lifestyle (my words and deeds) will please God all the days of my life on earth and I will live with Him in heaven forever.
